Normal Operation Modes

The L-849(L) REIL and L-859(L) ODAL operate in high, medium, or low intensity modes as determined by the control input or regulator current.  Intensity is selectable via the controller for voltage-powered (Type V) units or automatically follows the series circuit current for current-powered (Type I) units (2.8 A to 6.6 A). The system supports primary/secondary redundant operation; the primary unit controls normal flashing while the secondary provides automatic backup if the primary fails.

Press and hold while scrolling to change the selected setting.

Flash Sequencing and Rates

The L-849(L) REIL flashes at a field-programmable rate, typically 60 or 120 flashes per minute (fpm), synchronized between primary and secondary units. Sequence timing is adjustable to meet specific approach lighting requirements (e.g., MALSR, SSALR, ALSF-I/II).

The L-859(L) ODAL operates in sequenced flashing mode as part of a larger approach lighting array, with flash rates and timing coordinated with adjacent units.

Monitoring and Diagnostic Features

Flash monitoring continuously checks for proper operation of the LED array and reports faults via the controller. An elapsed time meter records total operating hours for maintenance scheduling and component life tracking. True RMS current sensing (standard on all units, enhanced with option A on Type V) provides accurate intensity verification and fault detection.

Startup and Shutdown Behavior

Upon power application, the controller initializes, performs self-diagnostics, and begins flashing at the configured intensity and rate.
No manual startup sequence is required; the system begins normal operation automatically. During shutdown or power loss, flashing ceases immediately; upon restoration, the system resumes operation without reconfiguration.

Primary/Secondary Failover

If the primary unit detects a fault or loses power, the secondary unit automatically assumes control to maintain continuous flashing. Both units must be interconnected per the wiring diagram for failover to function. The system returns to primary control when the primary unit is restored.

General Operational Notes

The system supports local, remote, or automatic control depending on site configuration. All operation complies with FAA AC 150/5345-51 photometric and performance standards. Do not energize the system until installation, wiring, aiming, and programming are verified complete.
