Overview

The input surge arrestor is installed on the incoming line side of the CCR. Its purpose is to protect internal components from voltage transients and surge events.

Primary Function

The input surge arrestor diverts transient voltage spikes. It protects the input circuitry. It helps prevent damage to internal components. Surges may be caused by utility switching events, lightning activity, or power system disturbances. The arrestor limits overvoltage exposure to the regulator.

Location in the System

The input surge arrestor is connected across the incoming power lines. It operates independently of the control system. Its function is passive and protective.

Protection Scope

The input surge arrestor protects the control transformer, input contactor, SSR circuitry, firing card, and DCMU. It does not regulate voltage during normal operation. It only responds during transient conditions.

Failure Considerations

If the input surge arrestor fails, surge protection may be reduced. Additional internal damage could occur during a transient event. Inspection should be performed if surge events are suspected.

Service Considerations

Before servicing, de-energize input power. Follow lockout/tagout procedures. Verify absence of voltage. Surge arrestors are connected to line voltage and must be treated as energized until verified safe.
