Summary
Provides the procedure to replace a light engine with a known-working unit in an L862 LED High Intensity Runway Light

Content

Tools Required

T25 Torx driver.

Power Off and Lockout

Ensure the Constant Current Regulator (CCR) is fully powered down and locked out before beginning disassembly.

Remove the Cap

Use a T25 Torx driver to remove the four screws securing the cap to the fixture body.
Lift the cap straight up and set it aside.
The cap orientation defines Side A and Side B light engine positions.

Identify the Faulty Light Engine

Determine whether the issue is occurring on Side A or Side B.

Remove the Corresponding Faceplate

Use a T25 driver to remove the two screws securing the faceplate on the affected side.
Once the screws are removed, lift the faceplate straight up and off.
With the faceplate removed, the light engine is now fully accessible.
Tip: Perform this step with the fixture in a horizontal position to prevent the light engine from falling once unsecured.

Remove the Light Engine

Carefully support the light engine and remove it from the fixture.
It is mounted via the faceplate and base screws only — no additional fasteners are used.
Gently lift the light engine out of the body and set it aside.

If Arctic Kit (Thermostat Board) Is Present

Do not attempt to remove the thermostat board unless you have already disconnected the wires at the thermostat board side.
If intermittent LED behavior is suspected, you may carefully apply light pressure to the thermostat wires with power applied to see if contact can be temporarily restored. This connection is a known point of failure and this test may help confirm the issue.

Install a Known Working Light Engine

Place the replacement light engine into position within the fixture body.
Ensure it is seated properly against the base and that alignment with the connector board is maintained.
The connector board is a passive PCB that bridges power/control signals between the light engines and the main control board. It has three rows of pins that must align with each light engine and the power/control board.

Reinstall the Faceplate

Reinstall the faceplate over the newly installed light engine.
Use the two T25 screws removed earlier and ensure the faceplate is flush and secure.

Reconnect Thermostat Wires (If Applicable)

If thermostat wires were removed earlier, reconnect them at the thermostat board side.
Confirm that all connections are fully seated and not under strain.

Reinstall the Connector Board

Carefully align and press the connector board pins into the connectors on the Power/Control board and light engines.

Reinstall the Cap

Place the cap back onto the fixture.
Use a T25 driver to reinstall the four screws, applying firm downward pressure to compress the gasket evenly.

Restore Power and Test

Re-energize the CCR.
Step through intensity levels and verify that the replacement light engine is functioning correctly.
Observe both the main LED output and, if present, Arctic Kit functionality.

Safety Reminder

Always maintain safe working conditions by using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary.
Only qualified service personnel should perform light engine replacement on airfield LED fixtures.
Follow lock out / tag out procedures and verify absence of hazardous voltage before disassembly or handling light engines/connectors.
